Kefir for Skin Care: DIY Masks

A kefir face mask is one of the simplest treats you can make in your kitchen: cool, creamy and ready in a minute. People around the world have used fermented milk this way for generations. Here are three easy recipes we like, and the small habits that keep the experience pleasant.

The short version

  • Use plain kefir: no sugar, fruit or flavouring, from a freshly opened bottle.
  • Three easy mixes: kefir with honey, with finely ground oats, or with mashed avocado.
  • Leave it on for 10–15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. Once or twice a week is plenty.
  • Try it on your inner arm first, then spread it over your forehead, cheeks and chin.
  • For every day: our kefir soap brings kefir into your daily wash.

How we checked this guide

  • Taiwan Food and Drug Administration: its advice on homemade face masks: clean tools, fresh ingredients and short use (Ministry of Health and Welfare, in Chinese).
  • The American Academy of Dermatology: its method for testing a new product on your arm (AAD).
  • Our own kitchen: the amounts are the ones we use at home with our plain milk kefir.

Why kefir feels so gentle

  • Mildly sour: kefir is about pH 4.6 and contains roughly 1% lactic acid, the same acid that gives it its fresh taste (review).
  • Cool and creamy: straight from the fridge it spreads easily and feels refreshing on the skin.
  • Simple ingredients: plain kefir is just milk fermented with kefir grains, so you know exactly what you are putting on.

Before you start

  1. Test it on your arm. Dab a little on the inside of your arm twice a day for 7–10 days, as dermatologists suggest. If the skin stays calm, you are ready.
  2. Use clean tools: a clean bowl and spoon, and kefir from a freshly opened bottle.
  3. Start with a clean face and spread a thin layer over your forehead, cheeks and chin.
  4. Mix only what you need for one mask, and enjoy the rest of the bottle in a glass.

Three kefir masks to make at home

1. Kefir and honey

Mix 1 tablespoon of plain kefir with 1 teaspoon of honey until smooth. Spread it on, relax for 10–15 minutes, then rinse well with lukewarm water, because honey is a little sticky. It feels soft and leaves the skin feeling moist.

2. Kefir and oats

Grind 1 tablespoon of rolled oats into a fine powder, stir it into 1 tablespoon of plain kefir and let it stand for 2 minutes to thicken. The paste stays put on the face and rinses off easily. Rinse it off with gentle circles of your fingertips.

3. Kefir and avocado

Mash a quarter of a ripe avocado and mix in 1 tablespoon of plain kefir. The result is rich and smooth, a nice choice when the air-conditioning has made your skin feel dry. Rinse after 10–15 minutes.

Kefir in a bar of soap

If you like the idea of kefir in your daily routine on the outside too, our kefir soap is a cosmetic made for washing. It is a cold-process soap made with our milk kefir and five plant oils, such as olive and coconut oil, cured slowly and offered in six scents.

  • What it does: cleans the skin and removes dirt and excess oil, with a creamy lather that leaves the skin feeling soft.
  • What the kefir is for: its milk fat makes the lather creamy.
